Transparent Fish for Studying Cancer

Now scientists at Children's Hospital Boston have generated a transparent zebrafish by mating two specific strains: a breed that lacks reflective pigment, called roy orbison, with one that lacks black pigment, called nacre. The offspring had only yellow pigment in their skin, essentially looking clear. Richard White, a clinical fellow in the Stem Cell Program at Children's, named the new breed Casper, according to a press release from the hospital.
Here is an excerpt from the press release:

Viewing the fish under a microscope, White saw the cancer cells begin to spread within five days. He even saw individual cells metastasize--something that has not been observed so readily and in real time in a living organism.The spreading melanoma cells appeared to "home" to the skin after leaving the abdominal cavity. "This told us that when tumor cells spread to other parts in the body, they don't do it randomly," says White. "They know where to go."The fish may also answer questions about stem-cell transplants. While transplants of blood-forming stem cells help cancer patients rebuild healthy blood, some transplants don't "take," according to the press release, for reasons that are unknown. Scientists have lacked a full understanding of what steps blood stem cells must take to do their job, says White. He showed that the process is observable in the fish. He first irradiated a transparent fish's bone marrow, then transplanted fluorescent blood-forming stem cells from another zebrafish. After four weeks, the fluorescent stem cells had visibly migrated and grown in the fish's bone marrow, which is in the kidney. Even individual stem cells were visible--something that researchers haven't easily observed in a living organism, White says.By studying how the stem cells embed and build blood in the fish, scientists can look for ways to help patients rebuild their blood faster. Drugs and genes could be tested in the living fish, with direct observation of results, White says.

Yes We Can

Check out this video of a Barack Obama speech set to music. I really hope this guy could make a difference to the American politics which is mainly about money. His roots stretches back to kenya, he even has relatives in Kenya, one of my Kenyan friend who is one of his relatives told me that he's really cool guy. He's one of the inspirational & charismatic personality i have ever seen in American politics. The world simply loves him, for me Hilary is too politicized to be the president of America, already corrupt with so many connections, she won't be able to do any change to the world. And when she smiles i don't even see any honesty in it, only constants greed for power.

Village, Grandma & Lost Happiness

* views from my village

Last Saturday I visited my grandma’s house, the journey revoked memories of my beautiful childhood. The village is situated far away inside the central mountain range of Sri Lanka. The landscape is filled with vast stretches of tea plantations. The road descends down to the village situated in a valley partly covered by rice fields. There is an old temple right in the middle of the rice field making the scenery picture perfect. We always used to point out the partly visible roof of grandma’s house to others when we were descending towards the valley below. I always loved to visit grandma’s house, specially during the New Year festival season, it was the central hub of entertainment for the whole village. There were people playing Raban ( traditional drumming done by four people),eating on the huge table full of food, placing a firecracker behind some one who is unaware, playing cards or carom, enjoying the giant swing specially build for those who seek rush of adrenaline.

I must explain little bit about this swing, it is built by tying two ropes on top of a coconut tree, the ends are tied to a piece of flat wood so people can sit on it, they choose a tree up on the hill to make sure that it fly over the house brushing the tops of trees below like a giant pendulum. It was so exiting and popular among the visitors, we had to stand on line to get on it sometimes. But fortunately accidents were rare, someone slipped and fell on some banana trees below and lived to tell the tale with few bruises, once a guy lost hold of his sarong while in mid air which made women run in to the house in shame, made us laugh for weeks, it was the story of the year, the guy had to stay on the swing for considerable amount of time until others managed to stop it. The house was open to anybody in the village anytime of the year, full of happiness and sharing, most of the time there were at least 15 people to eat, that wasn’t a problem for any of my grand parents.

Food was not a problem at that time, it was always growing nearby. They were happy sharing their happiness with some of the poor villagers, I still admire their generousness. It’s hard to find people like them nowadays. Then my grandfather died (he’s another story), my uncles got married, open economy and war stated to change the way people think. Beautiful village life got shattered in to pieces by the globalization. The village has hardly changed its looks during the last 29 years; it’s still beautiful and serene (look at the pictures). But it doesn’t create that beautiful New Year scenario anymore, most of the villagers are busy earning money in the hope of finding happiness at some point in time in the future, but few of them know that it was already with them when they were poor.

Iranian President & His Blog

Blogging is no longer an ordinary mans way of shouting to the world. Even world leaders take this powerful tool to deliver their message across the world. Iranian President,Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is one of them. He started his blog more than a year ago, He always tried to keep his promis of allocating 15 minutes of his time per week to write his blog. No matter how hard western media tried to mark him as part of evil, millions of people around the world admire him for his simplicity and speaking the truth. According to some news articles he's very simple man who dedicated his life to make his country a better place. I found some article on the internet about his life styles. These are some of the facts that astonished me.

* He still brings his food to work made by his wife
* Sleeps on the floor
* removed all the extravagant furniture’s in his office & replaced them with ordinary wooden chairs
* Joined the municipal staff who came to clean the presidential premises
* He still lives in the old house inherited by his father
* doesn't take the presidential salary, he earns 250$ by working as a lecturer in the university
* Fly in the economy class
* Converted his official plane to a cargo plane to reduce the government costs
* Any minister can enter his office without permission
* Stopped welcoming ceremonies and photo sessions
* Behaves like an ordinary man (see the picture of him praying with normal people)

GOD LET HIM BE THE PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA!!!

Really Good Personality Test

The following is an internet-based study of personality done by Northwestern University Department of Psychology designed from the works of John Johnson . Many of us have a good idea what it means to be extraverted or agreeable at an intuitive level, but we are interested in what form those descriptions take at the most basic level. One theory on this subject argues that there are five basic dimensions of personality -- Extraversion, Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience.This study has two purposes. One is to find out more about these five dimensions of personality. Another is to take part in and further the use of the internet as a collaborative and data collection tool. Support War for Greater Good

Only thing we can do after a bomb attack

For the past 30 years we were trying relentlessly to come to an agreement with the worlds most dangerous terrorists group Tamil Tigers (LTTE). It may have started as a freedom struggle. But with time, it has become an organization which prevents itself from coming to an agreeable solution. For the past years its leaders never even wanted to consider an alternate solution other than creating a separate land for minority Tamil population. All the time they were spreading revenge and hatred towards Sinhalese among their own people. It has been 30 years; those who were born during the time the problem started may never even have the chance to be with a Sinhalese. Their only option is to believe what their leaders have to say and to die the way they decide. Most of them are kids, less than 18 years, who doesn’t have any knowledge of the world outside the battlefield.

The organization has developed into a large business machine of international weapons trade, drugs, money and mafia. The people around them are so brain washed, willing to blow themselves-up, just to be born as a tree in a Tamil land while their leader’s kids can study safely in a European country to return and take up the business from dad. The leaders flee with their families to other countries when threatened, and leave 14 year kids on the frontline, or order women to blow themselves up for them to return (If the news of Piribahiran fleeing to India is true).

Can we ever come to an agreement and leave Tamil people with the hands of an organization like that? Take a look at LTTE killings so far this year, close to 10 bombs targeting innocent civilians, mostly buses. They have proved that they are capable of doing any inhuman act to achieve what they want. Lets assume that we agreed to offer nearly half of our country to them, aren’t we leaving those people with a group who doesn’t even respect basic human rights, like not using kids for war, not using suicide bombers, not targeting innocent people to achieve their goals, not stealing people money for their own benefits. If we do, it will definitely be the start of another problem far greater than the current situation.

I don’t see any other way to stop them from planning attacks, training terrorists and amassing weapons non other than by disorganizing their commanding structure. To achieve that, our army must capture their strongholds; it’s the only option that we have left with. Their recent attacks designed to create fear & panic among people, hoping to stop the army from reaching Vanni. I’m totally fed-up with this mayhem, to see people dead and blown to pieces everyday on the TV. Its time to decide, are we going to drag this war for another 10 or so years, spending billions of dollars which could have used to develop this country ,or end it now. If there was someone in our country 10 years before committed to thwart terrorists once and for all, what ever the cost, we would have been free by now.

Sri Lankan Giant squirrel (Ratufa )

This beautiful Sri Lankan Giant Squirrel often comes near to my home to eat these fruits. She was totally unafraid of my presence, which means it was rarely disturbed by humans. Anyway,how can anyone hurt a beautiful animal like this?
