Brand new helicopter

I went to a tourism exhibition yesterday, and found this cool brand new helicopter parked just out side the hall. There was a team of people who wanted to promote their new helicopter service in Seychelles .I edged closer to have a look, a guy (probably the pilot) called me and said " Get in of you want, sit on the pilot seat if you want to see how it feels,” I was like " WOW,okey". That machine was really cool, the guy explained all the controls to me, but I was kind of afraid to touch any controls, there were 1000's of them. It’s hard to believe that thing could fly; I mean it was like a toy, the size of the engine could be similar to a car engine.

Save This Place

Rocks & Beach, originally uploaded by poojitha.

In 30 years time this beautiful beach and the small island in this picture will be gone, I would only have this picture to show my grand children that this was a place that i visited long ago. They will listen wide eyed when I say how I swam up to the island to watch beautiful fishes, and how many of them surrounded me without any fear. It would be like a fairy tale for them, when I describe how beautiful and colorful the coral reefs were. They will ask me what happened to that beautiful place and the fish. I would say “pollution killed the fish, Global warming destroyed the beach". They would definitely envy us being so selfish, for not doing simple things that could have done to save this place for them to see.

How To Torture Slaves

I visited the museum in Victoria recently. The most interesting things were the tools they used to torture slaves, some were designed to stop them from running away, like long hooks around the neck which prevents them from venturing in to the thick forest. Its hard to believe that humans were treated like this few centuries ago. Once I heard some where that Africans were once displayed as animals in zoos, don't know if that its true but I'm proud that sri lankan history was never tainted by such inhuman acts, maybe because of Buddhist culture. But some believes that slavery still exist in different form even today, only difference is that they don't use chains anymore.

Lobster ,A Gadget to Beat i-Phone

This is a modularized conceptual multimedia device, which means each module attached to the central control module has a different function like phone, camera and Mp3. Advantage of this device is that we can decide which module to buy or not.The device looks like a lobsters tail when all the modules are attached and it could be wrapped around your wrist. This futuristic design has an MP3 module, a GPS one, a hard drive, a camera, a mobile phone and a heart rate monitor. If this kind of design comes in to market, it would surely beat i-phone, I was dreaming about something like this. This attractive concept device is designed by designer Danilo Mangini.

:-) Turns Twenty Five

Twenty five years ago university professor Scott E. Fahlman used ,a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis -- as a horizontal "smiley face :-)" in a computer message. he posted the message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on September 19, 1982. He believes that he's the first one to use :-) since nobody ever claimed to have invented it before him . Eventually other emoticons were invented by the internet users [ :-( ;-) :-D :-p :-S :-\ ] . I think he changed the way we express ourselves in the internet, I've always got a better feeling when some one type :-) than typing "I'm Happy or thats funny" . Hey i think i invented one too, type (:-)) when you use google chat, it will bring a complete smiling face (just kidding). Actually i got this idea when i was chatting with a friend of mine, maybe it was used before me. Anyway " Happy :-) Day". Read the full story.

Taleban Attacks Buddha Again , WHY?

Statue in Pakistan

Would you destroy Taj Mahal because it was build by a Muslim? Would you destroy the giant Pyramids in Egypt because its a Muslim country? I know the answer, its big NO, right? These things don't belong to a specific religion or a race, they belong to the whole world, these things portray the development of man kind, they are treasures, they belong to US! , not everybody think like that. Today I was shocked to here that a giant Buddha statue in Pakistan was destroyed by Muslim fundamentalists group called Taleban. This is not the first time they did something like this, in March 2001 as Afghanistan's then rulers destroyed the 6th-Century Bamiyan Buddhas. The Taleban said they were offensive to Islam , it was the biggest Buddha statue in the whole world.

Bhamian Statue in Afganistan

The statue destroyed recently which is 2200 years old was carved into a 40m (130-foot) high rock,it was considered largest in Asia. I can't understand these people, they are erasing the wold history, the statues were untouched by many Muslim rulers for thousands of years and they want to destroy it now. Buddhist always respected other religions , Buddhism is the only religion which never shed blood in the name of the religion. I really can't understand why they hate Buddhism, we never had any problems with Muslims for thousands of years. First they lost Christians and Hindus and now they are loosing Buddhists too.I have a message for those who admire these kind of things. If you want to know how I feel about this just imagine how you feel if someone bombed the The Black Stone in Mecca.

Universe, Bacteria & Myself

This is a small thought occurred to me today, not that small though, it’s about the universe. I usually try to compare myself to the vastness of the universe, go out on a starry night lie down on the lawn, look at the stars and wonder how far it could go, how many beings like you doing the same thing at the same moment and wondering are we alone, you’ll feel really small, but you’ll enjoy that. Let’s say bacteria got the brains to think and reason and so on, so there is an intelligent bacterium who wants to understand its environment and why he’s there. At room temperature and normal humidity, Escherichia coli (E. coli), bacteria found in ground beef that causes food poisoning, can live for a few hours to a day.

So within that short period of time it’s impossible for him to even find out that there is a night & day, or at least that he’s living in a piece of meat. Even if they pass down the knowledge for generations to come, it’s nearly impossible to think that they would realize anything about this planet or the universe. An average bacterium is about one micrometer long (millionth of a meter). If you compare the size of the universe with the size of the humans, even the whole planet is like a microbe living in an ocean. When you comprehend the age of the universe (13-20 billion years), our whole human history is like a fraction of a second. Would it be possible for us to even understand who we are, and why we are here or what is the universe? In Buddhism it’s said that it’s wise to explore ones self rather than wasting time over thinking what is the end of the universe or how it was created because it’s not possible to find an answer. What do you think?

9/11 in 3D

I found this cool video in a popular website called Liveleak.com . They seems to have used a series of still pictures ,but it definitely gives a 3 dimensional feeling plus a dramatic effect. This technique is called 2.5D or 3D projection, click here if you want to know how 3D projection is done, enjoy the video.

Escaped a Crocodile

I like to present this as a short story, but this story is based on a true incident which happened to me when i was very young. Hope to see some helpful comments like you did for the previous story.

I was very young at that time, probably 14 years old. We used to swim in the river near my home .Its the largest river in sri lanka , called Mahaveli. I don't know how many times we were punished by our parent for going there secretly, rivers are very dangerous, more dangerous than the sea, specially for inexperienced. The place we used to swim was ideal for swimming. I mean ideally dangerous, large rocks emerging here and there made currents coil in many different directions. At that age we were always attracted to danger, don't know why, used to brag afterwards on how we almost got drowned or how the current dragged us so far down. Once I almost got drowned, caught up with a strong current and went under water to emerge further down the river, gasping for air and coughing at the same time to get rid of the water in the throat. It was not a pleasant experience, drowning is a horrible way of dying ,believe me, this is from experience, start learning to swim if you don't know.

So that day we went the river as usual, after a long walk we reached the destination. It was our favorite spot, part of the river was covered with sand dunes making a miniature beach. We stood on the river bank and looked at the river, " Fucking hell" heard some one murmur. The river has swollen to the brim due to last nights rain,it has covered most of the beach. It seemed like that the current would swept away the huge rocks anytime. We gave up our hopes of having a fun time, it could be too cold to swim anyway. We decided to have few dips and leave. I took my cloths off and looked at the other side of the river, felt bit uneasy seeing huge amount of water racing downwards like a giant snake."Can you swim across the river?" my brother asked in a challenging tone, "Yeah i could, if i want to" i said. "Ok, lets see how you do it then" a friend snapped, at that age dignity is more important than anything, specially in front of my brother. So i took a deep breath and looked at the other side, heart rate rising, surge of adrenaline flowing through my veins, I dived in to the freezing cold water.

When I came up I realized that that I have done a great mistake, within seconds I was going down stream really really fast. I summoned up my whole strength and started swimming towards the other end. My arms started getting heavier by each stroke, legs began to feel numb and I was only half way through, then without warning something touched my legs, I definitely felt it for the second time, what could it be?, A CROCODILE?. The thought made me feel an electric shock running through the leg and hitting the heart. Suddenly I felt my awareness grow beyond my usual limit, heart rate up to the level of exploding at any time, fear vibrating in my head, eyes frozen on the ultimate goal, the rock at the other end. My hands started to work like a motor, painful but unwilling to stop I moved forward like an arrow.

I could still hear the creature following me, probably waiting for the right moment to snap on my leg," I don't want to die" my head screamed, another twenty feet's for safety. Crocodiles kill their prey by dragging them underwater and suffocating them, OH NO!, I redoubled my efforts. It touched my legs again!, could be the jaws closing, made me leap out of water for a while, splashes of water crashed in to my mouth and went right through my nose in to the lungs, head started to burn, eyes went hazy, I wanted to give up and cry. Then I saw the rock only five feet's away, I lunged foward like a hungry serpent towards its prey, grabbed the stone, heaved my self on top and moved further away as possible from the water. Then I looked back to see the crocodile,it emerge from the water, heaved it self on the rock and asked me "What made you swim that fast?", I wiped my eyes to get a clear view, It was my brother, All this time he was following me and I thought it was a crock, I felt like killing him on the spot but changed my mind, I still needed to get back.

Apocalypto

The movie Apocalypto is a gripping tale of a tribesman who fights to save his family from a group of blood thirsty Mayans. Mayan civilization is on of the greatest and mysterious civilization in the world. The movie recreates the rituals of Mayans and their culture. The movie is nonstop action and adventure, I would have loved the movie more if there was less blood, the heart ripping scene will definitely make you shiver. There was this hilarious scene at the beginning of the movie. The tribes men make fun of a guy who’s unable to make his wife pregnant, then one guy gives him a magic powder promising him that it would do the trick if he rub it on his penis before he had sex. So the guy goes home and try to apply his newly gained wisdom in to practice, but within minutes he comes out running crying for water to wash his penis, and his wife comes out and start washing her mouth, magic poison turns out to be chilly powder.

Sun Bird Nest Completed

Sun Bird, originally uploaded by poojitha.

I decided to keep the nest as it is, because I was feeling bit uneasy of removing it. They were very busy for the last 4 days, now the nest is almost complete, saw them bringing feathers to decorate the interior, actually its more of a comforting tactic i guess. They were placing the feathers inside and wiggle their bodies to make them flat, pretty cute. My door is a tinted glass sliding door, so its easy for me to observe the nest without being noticed by the birds.I hope they would lay some eggs soon, love to here them sing, they have a beautiful voice despite their appearance .

Sun Bird So Close

I have a big problem to solve now, actually its right in front of my door step. I found it today when I returned from shopping in town. There was this nice plant always full of beautiful flowers in front of my veranda which spreads its creepers all over the place . It actually grew in to the veranda covering part of it, I didn't mind. But a bird (Seychelles Sun Bird) has started to build a sweet little hanging nest on a creeper right in front of the door; actually I was thinking of cutting down that part of the creeper since it always brushed on our legs when we go out. It was fascinating to watch these two birds bringing dried out leaves and cob webs to build their nest. They have a very beautiful voice, if you care to listen. But the location they have chosen to build the nest is not very logical in my opinion. When ever I go out the birds fly away hastily and it makes me feel guilty.

If they decide to lay eggs, I may have to use the back door; I mean I really feels uneasy in this kind of situations. But for gods sake, we have visitors and they bring kids and kids love birds nest, especially if they see birds in it. I don't wont to witness some kid come running "mommy look I've got a birds nest, there a re small birds inside, can I keep it?” Last time they built a nest in the backyard, that was fine and i even wrote a blog post about them. Why couldn't they build a nest over there? My wife feeds birds and most of them are quite friendly with her. Last time I checked there were about 30 birds near the kitchen window, waiting for my wife to feed them. But that doesn't mean they can build nests in my house. If I discourage them building the nest over there, they may even find a new place to build their nest, I mean I'm doing a favor to them in long term, isn't it? But my wife says the reason for those birds to come quite close to us was that they trusted us. I don’t want to be responsible for destroying someone’s home or break their trust on me, so I’m confused.
