I like to present this as a short story, but this story is based on a true incident which happened to me when i was very young. Hope to see some helpful comments like you did for the previous story.
I was very young at that time, probably 14 years old. We used to swim in the river near my home .Its the largest river in sri lanka , called Mahaveli. I don't know how many times we were punished by our parent for going there secretly, rivers are very dangerous, more dangerous than the sea, specially for inexperienced. The place we used to swim was ideal for swimming. I mean ideally dangerous, large rocks emerging here and there made currents coil in many different directions. At that age we were always attracted to danger, don't know why, used to brag afterwards on how we almost got drowned or how the current dragged us so far down. Once I almost got drowned, caught up with a strong current and went under water to emerge further down the river, gasping for air and coughing at the same time to get rid of the water in the throat. It was not a pleasant experience, drowning is a horrible way of dying ,believe me, this is from experience, start learning to swim if you don't know.
So that day we went the river as usual, after a long walk we reached the destination. It was our favorite spot, part of the river was covered with sand dunes making a miniature beach. We stood on the river bank and looked at the river, " Fucking hell" heard some one murmur. The river has swollen to the brim due to last nights rain,it has covered most of the beach. It seemed like that the current would swept away the huge rocks anytime. We gave up our hopes of having a fun time, it could be too cold to swim anyway. We decided to have few dips and leave. I took my cloths off and looked at the other side of the river, felt bit uneasy seeing huge amount of water racing downwards like a giant snake."Can you swim across the river?" my brother asked in a challenging tone, "Yeah i could, if i want to" i said. "Ok, lets see how you do it then" a friend snapped, at that age dignity is more important than anything, specially in front of my brother. So i took a deep breath and looked at the other side, heart rate rising, surge of adrenaline flowing through my veins, I dived in to the freezing cold water.
When I came up I realized that that I have done a great mistake, within seconds I was going down stream really really fast. I summoned up my whole strength and started swimming towards the other end. My arms started getting heavier by each stroke, legs began to feel numb and I was only half way through, then without warning something touched my legs, I definitely felt it for the second time, what could it be?, A CROCODILE?. The thought made me feel an electric shock running through the leg and hitting the heart. Suddenly I felt my awareness grow beyond my usual limit, heart rate up to the level of exploding at any time, fear vibrating in my head, eyes frozen on the ultimate goal, the rock at the other end. My hands started to work like a motor, painful but unwilling to stop I moved forward like an arrow.
I could still hear the creature following me, probably waiting for the right moment to snap on my leg," I don't want to die" my head screamed, another twenty feet's for safety. Crocodiles kill their prey by dragging them underwater and suffocating them, OH NO!, I redoubled my efforts. It touched my legs again!, could be the jaws closing, made me leap out of water for a while, splashes of water crashed in to my mouth and went right through my nose in to the lungs, head started to burn, eyes went hazy, I wanted to give up and cry. Then I saw the rock only five feet's away, I lunged foward like a hungry serpent towards its prey, grabbed the stone, heaved my self on top and moved further away as possible from the water. Then I looked back to see the crocodile,it emerge from the water, heaved it self on the rock and asked me "What made you swim that fast?", I wiped my eyes to get a clear view, It was my brother, All this time he was following me and I thought it was a crock, I felt like killing him on the spot but changed my mind, I still needed to get back.
